At least 14 activists from the French anti-immigrant movement Generation Identitaire were detained in Calais on Saturday, after police dissolved a makeshift checkpoint set up by the group to prevent refugees from entering the town. Left-over protesters marched on to the police station to demand that those who were detained be set free.
Around 130 of the activists erected the barricade, bolstered by oil barrels and bearing the message “Go home”, on a bridge at the town’s entrance. The group also reportedly lit fires and flares on the bridge before riot police broke up the protest.
